Description
MOTS-c 20mg from Certified Peptides is 20mg of MOTS-c in a sealed glass vial. MOTS-c is a mitochondrial-derived peptide. It’s intended for lab research only.
What is MOTS-c?
MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide encoded in the mitochondrial 12S rRNA gene. It was described in 2015 by Pinchas Cohen’s group at USC.
It acts on metabolism, in part through AMPK.
How MOTS-c works
Most proteins are coded in the cell nucleus. MOTS-c is one of a handful of peptides coded in mitochondrial DNA instead. Its main target looks like the folate cycle, which feeds into AMPK activation and better glucose handling in muscle.
Under stress it can move into the nucleus and change gene expression. Circulating levels drop with age in both mice and people, which is why it’s studied in metabolism and aging.

Published MOTS-c studies
Lee and colleagues reported in Cell Metabolism (2015) that MOTS-c prevented diet-induced obesity and insulin resistance in mice.
Reynolds and colleagues showed in 2021 that it improved physical capacity in young, middle-aged and old mice.
The primary literature is on PubMed. Here’s a search for MOTS-c studies to start from.
MOTS-c 20mg vs related compounds
Labs choosing MOTS-c 20mg usually weigh it against a few close relatives. MOTS-c is a 16-amino-acid peptide coded in mitochondrial DNA, studied for glucose use in muscle, while:
- AOD-9604 is hGH fragment 177-191 with an extra tyrosine, studied for fat breakdown without raising IGF-1
- HGH Fragment 176-191 is the 16-residue C-terminal end of growth hormone, the parent of AOD-9604
- 5-Amino-1MQ is a small molecule that blocks the enzyme NNMT inside fat cells
These four are studied for fat metabolism but act in very different places: the growth hormone fragments on fat tissue from outside, 5-Amino-1MQ and MOTS-c from inside the cell. See them all on our weight loss peptides page.
MOTS-c 20mg reconstitution and concentration
Here’s the math for 20mg of powder:
- 1mL of bacteriostatic water gives 20mg/mL
- 2mL of bacteriostatic water gives 10mg/mL
- 3mL of bacteriostatic water gives 6.67mg/mL
Choose the volume that suits your measurements. Mark the vial with the concentration and date so nobody has to guess later. The vial itself holds 3mL, so that’s the upper limit.
Use sterile bacteriostatic water, like our 10mL bacteriostatic water. Let the vial reach room temperature, run the water slowly down the inside of the glass, then roll the vial gently until the powder dissolves. Don’t shake it. Shaking can shear peptide chains.
MOTS-c 20mg storage and shelf life
The dry powder keeps best cold. A freezer at -20°C is ideal for long-term storage, and a fridge works for a few weeks. After reconstitution, store it in the fridge and finish it within roughly four weeks.
If you keep several vials going at once, our 10 vial container keeps them upright and together on a fridge shelf, and spare 3mL vial caps protect the stoppers once the seals are off.
How MOTS-c 20mg is tested
MOTS-c 20mg is made in the USA, and every batch goes to an independent U.S. laboratory before it’s sold. The lab confirms identity, measures the content and checks purity by HPLC. Our standard is 99% or higher.
You don’t have to take our word for it. The certificate of analysis for the current batch is in the image gallery at the top of this page, next to the product photo, and it shows the test date and the results.
Batches are also screened for endotoxins, heavy metals and sterility. Those contaminant checks matter as much as purity for cell work, where a small amount of endotoxin can skew results.
Choosing a MOTS-c strength
- MOTS-c 10mg: $58.00, about $5.80 per mg
- MOTS-c 20mg (this page): $90.00, about $4.50 per mg
- MOTS-c 40mg: $160.00, about $4.00 per mg
MOTS-c 20mg is one of the larger sizes, and bigger vials cost less per milligram. It suits longer studies where you’d otherwise reorder.
