MK-677 (ibutamoren) in brief
MK-677 (ibutamoren) is an orally active, nonpeptide growth hormone secretagogue developed by Merck. It mimics ghrelin at the GHS-R1a receptor, raising growth hormone and IGF-1. It’s often sold next to SARMs, but it isn’t one.
It was never approved as a medicine, and it’s on the WADA prohibited list.
MK-677 binds GHS-R1a, the same receptor as ghrelin and the GHRP peptides, in the pituitary and hypothalamus. That boosts the size of natural GH pulses and lifts IGF-1 from the liver.
Because it’s a small molecule, not a peptide, it survives digestion and lasts about a day, which is what made it attractive as an oral research tool. The same receptor drives hunger, so appetite goes up too.
Why a capsule format?
MK-677 was built to be taken by mouth. Merck’s studies used it as a once-daily oral compound, which is the whole point of a non-peptide ghrelin mimic.
Peptides taken by mouth face stomach acid and digestive enzymes, so oral and injected results aren’t interchangeable. If you’re comparing formats, run them as separate arms and keep notes on which one each result came from.

MK-677 research
Nass and colleagues ran a two-year trial in healthy older adults, published in the Annals of Internal Medicine in 2008. MK-677 raised GH and IGF-1 to levels seen in young adults and increased fat-free mass, with rises in fasting glucose noted.
Earlier Merck studies by Chapman and colleagues described how it raises GH while keeping the normal pulse pattern.
